Everything you need to know before, during, and after your visit

Whether you’re preparing for your first appointment or returning for ongoing care, this page provides answers to common questions about scheduling, insurance, patient portal, office policies, and what to expect throughout your experience at Grand Junction Dermatology.

New patients

Grand Junction Dermatology participates with many major insurance plans. Because coverage varies by plan, we recommend contacting your insurance company before your appointment to verify your benefits and confirm that Grand Junction Dermatology participates with your specific plan.

Before your appointment, we’ll send you instructions for completing any required forms and medical information electronically.

Depending on the type of information requested, you may be asked to complete forms through our online patient portal, where you can securely complete paperwork, review portions of your medical record, and manage certain aspects of your care, securely submit information through Klara, our secure text messaging platform, or use a combination of both.

If you do not have access to a smartphone or computer, you may complete your paperwork using a patient kiosk in our office before your appointment.

Your check-in time is 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Check-in is the first part of your visit. During this time, we’ll welcome you, verify any remaining information, collect any payment due at the time of your visit, and prepare you for your appointment before your dermatologist sees you.

To help ensure you receive the full time scheduled with your dermatologist, please arrive by your check-in time.

We understand that traffic, weather, and unexpected events can sometimes make you late. If you think you’ll arrive after your scheduled appointment time, please call us as soon as possible to let us know.

When you arrive, please check in with our front desk. If we’re able to see you without significantly delaying other patients, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. If arriving late would affect the schedule for other patients, we may ask you to reschedule your appointment so we can provide everyone with the time and attention they deserve.

We appreciate your understanding and will always do our best to work with you when unexpected delays occur.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. This allows us to offer that appointment time to another patient who may be waiting for care.

  • New patient appointments: If a first appointment is missed without at least 24 hours’ notice, we will be unable to schedule future appointments.
  • Office visits: A $70 no-show fee applies to appointments missed without at least 24 hours’ notice.
  • Surgical procedures: A $150 no-show fee applies to surgical procedures missed without at least 24 hours’ notice.
  • Cosmetic visits: A $100 no-show fee applies to cosmetic procedures missed without at least 24 hours’ notice.

If you have not already submitted your information electronically, please bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance card
  • A current list of your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements

If applicable, please also bring—or have sent to our office before your visit—any previous dermatology records, pathology reports, biopsy results, or other relevant medical records related to your skin concern.

Your dermatologist will review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and perform an examination.

When appropriate and scheduling allows, procedures such as skin biopsies may be performed during the same visit.

We take your privacy seriously and protect your medical information in accordance with federal privacy laws. Your information is shared only when necessary for your care, insurance processing, prescriptions, referrals, or as otherwise allowed or required by law.

For more information, please review our Notice of privacy practices.

Patient care

During a skin check, your dermatologist will examine your skin for concerning spots or changes. You are welcome to undress to your comfort level, and gowns are provided for your convenience.

Please point out any spots that are new, changing, bleeding, painful, itchy, or otherwise concerning to you.

If your dermatologist performs a biopsy, the specimen is sent to a specialized dermatopathology laboratory. A dermatopathologist examines the tissue under a microscope, and your dermatologist reviews those findings together with your examination to determine the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Your pathology results will be available through the online patient portal. Because results may be released automatically, you may see them before your dermatologist has had an opportunity to review them.

After your dermatologist reviews your results, a member of our team will contact you to explain the findings and discuss any recommended next steps.

Please check your medication supply before each appointment so refill needs can be addressed during your visit.

If you need a refill between appointments, you may ask your pharmacy to send us an electronic refill request or submit a refill request through the online patient portal.

Please allow at least 48 business hours for refill requests to be processed. Refill requests are not processed after hours, on weekends, or on holidays.

If you have not been seen by your dermatologist within the past year, a follow-up appointment may be required before additional refills can be authorized.
